Exfoliation is the easy way to prevent hair growth under the skin. The dead cells accumulate on the skin surface, creating a rigid layer which blocks the penetration of the new growing hairs after shaving.
If you exfoliate your legs often, you will remove the dead skin and you’ll release new hairs. Use a special bath brush, rub your skin and eliminate the residues. Also, a loofah made from natural or synthetic fibers is ideal for massaging your legs after showering. Exfoliation should be done every day, but never in the days after epilation. Your skin can be irritated, so exfoliation should be avoided for a day or two.
Moisturize your skin
Dry skin may be another reason of ingrown hairs. Feet hydration is very important not only to prevent ingrown hairs, but also to avoid unpleasant appearance caused by skin peeling.
An effective trick for intense hydration is to apply immediately after bathing, a natural moisturizing oil. You can use coconut oil, which has a delicate fragrance, olive oil, avocado oil, shea butter, cocoa butter etc. Also, baby oil is another perfect option to moisturize the dry skin feet.
Avoid silicone-based body lotions
Some cosmetic body lotions contain chemicals designed to cover the skin with a thin film that gives a perfectly smooth sensation immediately after application. But this is nothing but a trick that makes you think your skin was intensely hydrated. In reality, that synthetic film has harmful effects and can be responsible for ingrown hairs.
Choose the appropriate hair removal method
Depending on the texture of your hairs, which can be thicker or thinner, each hair removal method may have different results. It is therefore important to monitor carefully when these ingrown hairs occur, in order to discover which hair removal method it’s not good for you. For example, if your hairs are thick, the use of electric epilator could worsen hair growing under the skin.
In this case, it is preferable waxing or the pulsed light hair removal apparatus, which now you can do it in the comfort of your home.
Do not apply cosmetics immediately after epilation
It is not recommended using cosmetics immediately after epilation. Your skin may be irritated and the open pores from which hairs were extracted can become infected. Because of this, any synthetic substance applied to the skin could irritate it more. Do not use body creams, lotions, deodorants, perfumes. Open pores can become infected, causing inflammation and blockage, so the growing hairs will be locked inside.
